RC’s Vos one step away from Heisman finals (Manteca Bulletin Nov 12, 2010)

Ripon Christian High senior Logan Vos is a national finalist to earn the 17th Annual Wendy’s High School Heisman Award.

Vos and Daisha Matthews of Los Angeles Center for Enriched Studies were named the state winners out of a pool of 20 finalists. At the state level, over 55,000 applicants were reviewed.

The award recognizes the nation’s top student-athletes who are also outstanding members of their communities.

“The Wendy’s High School Heisman is a prestigious award that showcases a commitment to higher achievement and making positive contributions both on and off the field,” said Archie Griffin, a two-time collegiate Heisman Trophy winner, in a press release. “Daisha and Logan are inspirations to others in their school and community, and we’re honored to welcome them into the Heisman family.”

Vos will be pitted against the rest of the state winners for one of 12 national finalist berths. The final 12 will head to New York on Dec. 10 and will be a part of a televised ceremony on ESPN network, which will broadcast the event a day later.

Each finalist will earn a gold medal and a $2,000 award for their schools. One boy and one girl will earn the big prize — the Wendy’s High School Heisman trophy along with a $10,000 donation for their schools.
Vos is a two-sport star at RC.

In basketball last year, Vos earned all-Trans Valley League honors while helping the Knights reach the Sac-Joaquin Section Division V finals and a berth to the CIF Northern California Regional Championships. He averaged 13.6 points and 6.1 rebounds per game.

Vos was also tabbed the TVL’s Most Outstanding Golfer in 2009 and turned in the medalist score of 76 in the year-end conference tournament at Saddle Creek Golf Course in Copperopolis last spring. He earned a top-three finish in the SJS Division IV Tournament to advance to the Masters, where his 78 scores topped all area qualifiers who qualified.
